IN10 Conviction and Car Insurance: What It Means

Red car driving down road

An IN10 means you have been caught using a vehicle without the insurance required by law. It can lead to penalty points, a fine and, in some cases, a driving ban. It may also make car or van insurance harder to find or more expensive.

An IN10 does not always stop you from getting insured again. At Got You Covered, we arrange cover for drivers with motoring convictions. Our dedicated IN10 car insurance service is designed for drivers who may have fewer options after an IN10.

What does an IN10 conviction mean?

IN10 is the endorsement code for using a vehicle uninsured against third-party risks.

It is illegal to drive a vehicle on a road or in a public place without at least third-party insurance. A vehicle being insured does not always mean you are insured to drive it. You could still face action if you drive someone else’s car but your own policy does not cover you to do so.

GOV.UK confirms that you can be penalised if the vehicle is insured but you are not correctly insured to drive it.

What are the penalties for an IN10?

An IN10 carries 6 to 8 penalty points.

If the police deal with the offence by fixed penalty, the current penalty is normally £300 and 6 penalty points. The police can also seize the vehicle. If the case goes to court, you could receive an unlimited fine and may be disqualified from driving. You can check the current penalties for driving without insurance on GOV.UK.

New drivers should take particular care. If you get 6 or more points within two years of passing your first driving test, your licence will normally be revoked. As an IN10 can carry six points, one offence may be enough to trigger this rule.

Our glossary explains more about penalty points and driving bans.

Can you get car insurance with an IN10?

Yes. In many cases, you can still get car insurance with an IN10.

Some insurers may not offer a quote. Others may charge more or apply different terms. Each insurer assesses risk in its own way.

At Got You Covered, our IN10 insurance service is designed for drivers with this type of conviction. We work with insurers that may consider a wider range of driving histories.

Acceptance, price and policy terms are not guaranteed. Any quote will depend on your circumstances and the insurers available at the time.

What if your IN10 led to a driving ban?

If you were disqualified, you must not drive while the ban is in force.

When we refer to getting insured after an IN10 ban, we mean after the disqualification has ended and once your driving licence has been properly restored.

Depending on the type and length of the ban, you may need to apply for a new licence before driving again.

How can an IN10 affect your insurance premium?

There is no fixed amount that an IN10 will add to your premium.

A recent conviction may mean fewer insurers are willing to quote. Where cover is available, the premium, excess or other policy terms may be different.

Insurers may consider:

  • how recent the IN10 was
  • your penalty points and any driving ban
  • other motoring convictions
  • previous claims
  • your age and driving experience
  • your postcode
  • the vehicle you drive
  • annual mileage and vehicle use
  • your no-claims discount

Our blog on what affects your car insurance premium explains some of these factors in more detail.

Do you have to tell an insurer about an IN10?

When you apply for insurance or renew a policy, answer every question fully and accurately.

You will normally need to disclose an unspent conviction if the insurer asks about it. Once a conviction is spent, it usually does not need to be disclosed for most insurance purposes.

If you receive an IN10 during an existing policy, check the policy terms. Some insurers may require you to report the change straight away, while others may only ask at renewal. MoneyHelper has more information about getting insurance with a criminal conviction.

Incorrect or incomplete information could affect the policy or a future claim, depending on the circumstances.

What should you prepare before getting an IN10 insurance quote?

Having the right details ready can make the quote process easier. You may be asked for:

  • your IN10 code and relevant dates
  • the number of penalty points
  • details of any fine or driving ban
  • other motoring convictions
  • previous claims
  • your vehicle and annual mileage
  • how the vehicle will be used
  • your no-claims discount

Checking your driving record before applying can help you give accurate information.

Ways to improve your chances of finding cover

There is no guaranteed way to lower the cost of insurance after an IN10. However, some factors may affect the options available.

Keeping your driving record clear of further offences may help prevent your history from becoming more complex. A claims-free record may also help over time.

The vehicle you choose can affect the quote, so it may be useful to check insurance costs before buying another car.

A higher voluntary excess may reduce the premium in some cases. However, it increases the amount you may need to pay towards an eligible claim, so make sure the excess is affordable for you.

A specialist broker may also work with insurers that consider a wider range of driving histories.

Getting IN10 insurance with Got You Covered

An IN10 can make insurance more difficult to arrange, but it does not necessarily stop you from getting cover once you are legally entitled to drive.

At Got You Covered, we arrange specialist car insurance for drivers with previous motoring convictions, previous claims and a low no-claims discount.

Our dedicated IN10 car insurance page is the best place to start if you want to explore the options available.

We can look at policies from insurers we work with that may consider your circumstances. Acceptance, price, excesses, limits and exclusions depend on the insurer and the information you provide.

We do not recommend a specific insurer or policy. We provide information about the options available so you can decide whether a policy meets your needs.

If you drive a van, we may also be able to help through our van insurance service.
